What is Lunawood ThermoWood?

Lunawood ThermoWood is thermally modified wood whose properties are improved throughout the board, not only on the surface. Official Lunawood materials state that thermal modification reduces moisture-related movement, improves dimensional stability, and increases resistance to decay without chemical preservatives.

This makes Lunawood a strong fit for exterior applications where real-wood appearance matters but better stability than untreated softwood is needed.

Made in Finland from Nordic spruce and pine

Thermally modified using only heat and steam

Suitable for above-ground exterior applications

Naturally weathers to a silver-grey tone outdoors

Available as PEFC or FSC certified; Nordic Swan Ecolabel certified

Why choose Lunawood for decking and cladding?

If you want the look and feel of real wood, Lunawood offers a cleaner, more architectural option than many standard softwoods. Selected decking profiles are designed for hidden-fixing systems, and the material can either be left untreated to weather naturally or surface treated to help preserve its original brown tone.

Lunawood also offers certified sourcing options and widely used exterior profiles for both decking and cladding applications.

Maintenance and natural weathering

Lunawood decking requires very little maintenance.

Regular cleaning with water and a soft brush is the basic routine. If left untreated, the wood gradually turns grey because of UV exposure and weathering;

Lunawood says this natural greying does not affect the wood’s stability or resistance to decay.

To help retain the original brown tone, use a suitable pigmented UV-protective treatment following Lunawood's official Decking Maintenance and Care guide

Lunawood Thermowood FAQ

What is Lunawood ThermoWood?

Lunawood ThermoWood is real wood from Nordic spruce or pine that is thermally modified using only heat and steam. The process improves dimensional stability and durability without chemical preservatives.

Is Lunawood suitable for outdoor projects in Ontario and Quebec?

Lunawood’s official materials describe ThermoWood as suitable for all climates, and its factsheet lists LunaThermo-D as an above-ground exterior material for weather-exposed applications such as decking and cladding. (source)

Does Lunawood need oil or stain?

Not necessarily. If you accept natural greying, Lunawood can be left untreated outdoors. If you want to help preserve the original brown tone, Lunawood recommends a suitable pigmented surface treatment according to its maintenance guidance.

Will Lunawood turn grey over time?

Yes. Without surface treatment, Lunawood gradually turns grey because of UV exposure and weathering. According to Lunawood, this natural greying does not affect the wood’s stability or resistance to decay.

Can Lunawood be installed in direct ground contact?

No. Lunawood’s factsheet says LunaThermo-D is suitable for above-ground exterior applications and is not recommended for direct contact with the ground.
