Composite or PVC Decking – What’s the Difference?
If you’re looking for an alternative to wood decking that is low-maintenance and long-lasting, you’ve probably heard of composite decking or PVC decking.
These giants in the decking world may appear quite similar, but what’s the difference? Is one better than the other?
Both composite and PVC decking is durable, scratch resistant, and offers a solid warranty, yet there are a few key differences.
The most important difference between them is the material they’re made of. Composite is made from a mix of plastic and wood fibers, while PVC contains no wood and is made using polyvinyl chloride plastic (pvc).
Five categories in which the two materials can diverge are:

5 Differences Between Composite and PVC
1. Heat Retention
Composite (especially darker colours) will get hotter under direct sunlight as they retain more heat. Lighter colours will get less hot. PVC will not get as hot due to its ability to stay cooler (although the darkest colours will still get hot).
2. Weight
In terms of weight and installation, PVC is lighter than composite since it doesn’t contain any wood. This makes it easier to install than composite which is slightly heavier.
As an example, the average weight of a 12′ composite deck board is approximately 27.5 lbs. A PVC board of the same length would weigh approximately 13.5lbs.
3. Cost
Cost-wise, PVC is considered a premium material in all aspects, and this is reflected in its higher price on average compared to composite. While some PVC can be 50% more on average than composite, it depends on the line (there are some premium composites that are the same or very similar in terms of pricing).
4. Moisture Absorption
Since PVC does not contain wood, it cannot absorb moisture. Composite contains wood fibres, and when in constant contact with water, can have the tendency to expand. For a project on or near the water, such as a pool-side deck or a dock, it is recommended to use PVC.
5. Aesthetics
Some people choose PVC purely for its high aesthetic appeal, intricate and realistic streaking. High end composite is very similar, but some PVC colours are simply unbeatable.
If you have a flexible budget and want your deck to last literally forever, you can go with the most durable and visually appealing product, especially if your deck is on or near water.
If you are more budget-aware, and your deck is not near water, there are several beautiful composite options to choose from.
