What is IPE Wood?

IPE (pronounced “ee-pay”) is not an abbreviation, but rather the common name of Tabebuia serratifolia, a tropical Brazilian hardwood lumber, that is highly sought-after for premium hardwood decks.

It is one of the densest hardwoods available, with a rich, dark brown color that gives it a beautiful appearance.

IPE wood is native to Central and South America but can be purchased across Canada at Composite Deck Shops.

What is IPE Decking?

IPE Wood Decking Advantages

  • Dense and Long Lasting
IPE boasts a Janka hardness rating of 3,680 lbs, making it one of the most durable decking materials on earth, with an expected lifespan of up to 100 years. It will not rot or decay in any type of environment – even if you live next door to termites.
  • Naturally Beautiful
The best thing about a composite deck product is how closely it imitates real wood. But nothing beats genuine wood for its authenticity, and IPE has no need to imitate. It is 100% natural, with no added materials or chemicals.
  • Low Maintenance
If left untreated, it will naturally silver over time while keeping it’s durability intact – but there’s no need for you to worry about your beautiful wood fading. The rich brown color can be easily maintained with a yearly coat of our IPE oil.
  • Sustainably Harvested
IPE is a renewable and sustainable material that comes from carefully managed forests. For every tree cut down, 10 new ones are planted in its place.
  • Many Profiles
We carry IPE decking in lengths from 8 to 20 feet. Apart from the beautiful and durable deck wood, we also offer siding, as well as material for pergolas, railings, and screens.
  • Natural Resistance
IPE is naturally resistant to insects, rot, and decay: which are the most common reasons for problems with real wood decking. It will last up to 75 years, which is longer than even the longest lasting composite and PVC materials.

IPE Hardwood Questions and Answers

Why is IPE so expensive?

IPE wood is notably pricier than other types of wood such as redwood and cedar. It is also more expensive in comparison with most Composite Decking. The high cost of IPE decking is due to several factors, including:

  • Limited Supply: IPE trees are native to South America and are pretty rare in their natural environments.
  • Difficulty of Harvesting: IPE wood is extremely dense, making it difficult to saw and mill. Pre-drilling holes and using steel screws is necessary, and the hardwood chews up blades, which increases labor costs.
  • High Demand: IPE wood is a popular choice for outdoor decking projects due to its durability, resistance to harsh weather, low maintenance requirements, and beautiful appearance.
  • Inflation: the price raised additionally due to the surging real estate market and Covid-inspired home renovations.

Is IPE wood fire-resistant?

Yes, IPE lumber is naturally fire-resistant. It has an extremely high density, making it difficult for fire to penetrate the surface of the wood and low moisture content with insufficient number of gasses to fuel the fire.

It has been awarded a Class A fire rating, which is the highest rating for fire resistance, and the same as steel. This is the reason that IPE will sometimes be referred to as ‘Ironwood.’

IPE wood is a great choice both for outdoor applications where fire risk is a concern, and indoor applications where fire resistance is required, such as in schools and hospitals.

Does IPE hardwood require maintenance?

IPE hardwoods requires extremely low maintenance as long as you like the silver weathered color.
If you want to keep your IPE in it’s natural color, here are the simple things you need to do:

  • Cleaning: To keep the deck clean and free of debris, you can simply wash it with water or a power-washer.
  • U.V. Staining: IPE wood can be stained to enhance its natural color and protect it from U.V. rays.
  • Oil coating: IPE oil coating might be applied to maintain the rich brown color in IPE wood.
Notice that IPE hardwood is extremely dense and can only absorb a limited amount of oil per treatment.
  • Moisture Management: IPE wood is resistant to rot and moisture, but it is good practice to keep it dry to prevent mildew or mold growth.

What are the disadvantages of IPE Decking?

IPE hardwood lumber is a premium choice for Interior and Exterior Decking.
Some clients consider the following IPE board features to be disadvantages:

  • IPE Decking is expensive due to its uniqueness, quality and beauty.
  • IPE decks have a unique pattern with quite a bit of variation.
  • IPE hardwoods are extremely dense and quickly dulls saw blades and drill bits.
  • IPE boards silver as a result of sun-damage if not treated with IPE oil.
  • IPE deck boards can cup if improperly built and installed.

Is IPE wood sold in Canada?

IPE wood is native to Central and South America but is imported into the U.S. and Canada. Composite Deck Shop sells IPE in four locations across Ontario in Vaughan, Peterborough, London and Barrie.
